We are honoured to receive a donation of over 2000 hand knitted items from the Stansbury Community Craft Group. Uniting Country SA has been the recipient of these donations for the last three years, with a regular donation of thousands of knitted items each year. This year Uniting Country SA received 2000 items for adults, children, and babies which included beanies, jumpers, cardigans, mittens, scarfs, booties, quilts, rugs and so much more. This donation is incredibly important to UCSA and our clients as we move into winter, providing hundreds from around country SA with warmth.
Last year’s donation, an incredible 2,421 knitted items, have been distributed to our clients all across country SA. These donations have helped many. In Clare and Coober Pedy some of this donation was distributed to people leaving violent relationships with the help of our domestic violence programs. Many women and children using these services arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing and new high quality knitwear is vital for helping them through the cold winter months.
In Kadina, Clare, Peterborough and Port Pirie, families reaching out to our Strengthening Families Services and Parenting Programs have received baby clothing, children’s clothing, quilts and more. In one case a new mother had very few winter goods and no heating in her rental home, this donation helped give keep her baby warm over winter.
In Port Pirie our Client Engagement Service provided a married couple on a disability pension, whose heater broke during a power outage, keep warm with a double quilt, 2 knee blankets and some scarves and beanies. They also helped a person experiencing homelessness keep warm with some blankets. This person also accepted a referral to the UCSA’s Yorke & Midnorth Homelessness program helping him find emergency accommodation at the St Andrew’s Men’s Shelter.
This year we have already begun distributing these donations to our clients. With bags and boxes full of knitwear being sent to our community centres, offices, and other locations around the state.
These are just a few of the examples of how these donations have helped people all across the region. It shows just how far these donations can go in helping people. They have helped us keep our clients warm and helped them find the services they need. We are incredibly grateful to the Stansbury Community Craft Group for their donations, just as we are grateful to anyone who takes the time to make a donation.
