Port Pirie Community Foodhub

Port Pirie Community Foodhub

Background Information

It is estimated that each month 65,790 South Australians experience food insecurity, with one third of them being children.

With this in mind Uniting Country SA, in partnership with Nyrstar, Foodbank SA and other community organisations developed the Pirie Community Foodhub project. Our aim was to provide greater food security for the residents of Port Pirie and the surrounding regions.

$64,000 was raised at the Nyrstar Smelters Ball in 2012 and generously donated for establishment and running costs.

What do we do?

The Port Pirie Community Foodhub was established to provide members of the local community with greater food security. The Foodhub is an alternative location for grocery shopping where items are sold at a lower cost than the mainstream supermarkets. The majority of our stock is purchased from Foodbank SA, who have partnered with local food producers, manufacturers and retailers to purchase core staple items at discounted rates.

Food growers, manufacturers and processors produce quantities of food which, for various commercial reasons, cannot be sold. The products may be incorrectly labelled, have faulty packaging, be part of a trial run or are not produced to exact specifications.

It is estimated that as much as 30% of all food produced is unsaleable for a variety of reasons, and without Foodbank SA and its partnering organisations much of this would simply go to landfill.

On occasions we also receive kind donations of food and other items from local businesses, producers and members of the community.

To shop at the Foodhub you must be referred by a participating organisation (listed below), who have identified your need for access to lower cost food options.
