National Volunteers Week

National Volunteers Week

It’s National Volunteers Week this week. National Volunteers Week is an annual celebration in Australia of the work and time volunteers give to help their community. This year’s theme is “Making a world of difference” Volunteering extends across all areas of Australian society, from the arts, education, emergency services, sports and environment to health, community welfare, aged care and disability services. In 2016, Australians collectively volunteered 932 million hours in their local communities and the volunteering effort is valued at $5 billion annually in South Australia.

Uniting Country SA is proud of its wonderful volunteers who contribute their time, skills and knowledge to help support our programs throughout the whole agency. Our volunteers help our communities in some amazing and varied ways including, supporting our people with administration tasks, working in our op shop and our community centres across the state, tutoring members of the community in a variety of subjects, supervising others, and contribute in so many other ways. UCSA‘s amazing volunteers allow us to offer services we would not ordinarily be able to provide. In Port Pirie, in the month of April, UCSA’s volunteers provided over 2,000 hours of work, a value of over $100,000. Just for that one month.

“If not for volunteers, who would fight bushfires, coach the under 9s, care for our parks, run our op shops and deliver meals to the elderly?”
– Kylie Crouch, UCSA Volunteer Coordinator

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”
– Helen Keller

This year UCSA will be holding Morning Teas across our sites to celebrate our wonderful volunteers. Our Volunteer Coordinator also helped the Community Volunteers Working Group host the Volunteers Week Walk held in Port Pirie, where volunteers walked from the Flinders View Park to the Memorial Oval Sporting Complex. The Community Volunteers Working Group also held talks at two of Port Pirie’s high schools on Student Volunteering, discussing what volunteers do and how students can benefit.
