What is the the Microfinance program?

The Microfinance program provides individuals and families on low incomes access to safe, fair and affordable credit for essential items and services. Loans are free of interest charges and fees.

The Good Shepherd No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) loans are available for up to $1,500 for essential goods and services such as fridges, washing machines and medical procedures. Repayments are set up at an affordable amount over 12 to 18 months.

UCSA’s microfinance loans are available for up to $800 and cover expenses such as medical related and medication costs, sporting fees and equipment, and yard cleaning.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for a microfinance loan you must have a Health Care Card or earn less than $45,000 a year (after tax) for singles and less than $60,000 a year for couples. Loans cannot be used for cash, bond, rent arrears, debt consolidation, holidays or bills. Inquire about the loan at your local UCSA office. You will be given information about the document you need to bring your appointment.

How can I get a Microfinance loan?

The loan process takes place over three stages

  • Attend an interview to complete the loan process
  • Your loan will then be assessed and you will be notified of the outcome
  • Collect your items from the retailer
